Belief...

Is belief a choice? By that I mean, can someone one day decide "Hey this belief set I've been working with isn't working for me, so I'm gonna chuck it and just believe something else? Or does that kind of change take, "convincing."

Most people believe the things they've been told to as a child (yes, I realize there exceptions to that, but on a whole, I think it's true), and many of us are held back by our own beliefs (usually those beliefs about ourselves and what we are capable of)...

So is it possible to DECIDE to change what you believe?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Election time!

Well, the election is almost upon us, and I've seen a lot of what I'd describe as rhetoric on both sides of the coverage. Makes me wonder, which is worse:

Not voting at all.

Voting on rhetoric alone (which it seems most people are doing).

There's so much information out there, that it's nigh impossible to discern which of it is truth and which is total bull, so it seems that most people just choose to believe the stuff they like and call the stuff they don't lies, again on both sides. Makes me wonder if the very system isn't the problem...

What does Christmas mean?

I wasn't sure if I should post this, but I figure the holiday is over now, so what the hell, right? My boss was asking recently about the origins of Christmas. Looking it up on google, I found this:
http://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/Christmas_TheRealStory.htm

Warning: This may ruin your perception of the holiday.

You are the Hanged Man

Self-sacrifice, Sacrifice, Devotion, Bound.

With the Hanged man there is often a sense of fatalism, waiting for something to happen. Or a fear of
loss from a situation, rather than gain.

The Hanged Man is perhaps the most fascinating card in the deck. It reflects the story of Odin who offered himself as a sacrifice in order to gain knowledge. Hanging from the world tree, wounded by a spear, given no bread or mead, he hung for nine days. On the last day, he saw on the ground runes that had fallen from the tree, understood their meaning, and, coming down, scooped them up for his own. All knowledge is to be found in these runes.

The Hanged Man, in similar fashion, is a card about suspension, not life or death. It signifies selflessness, sacrifice and prophecy. You make yourself vulnerable and in doing so, gain illumination. You see the world differently, with almost mystical insights.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

Where to from here?

Well, I started my 32nd year a couple days ago...sounds more dramatic than turning 31 really was...honestly, I'm at the point where I feel kinda silly making any kind of big deal about my birthday anymore... I mean most birthdays are fun and exciting for those first 21 or so years...then it's every 5 (25, 30, etc)...I'm pretty sure after 40 the big birthdays are the ones that end in 0...maaaybe 45, but I can't say for sure...I'll tell ya when I get there...

Anyhow, birthdays and new years always make people (well...me, and I assume all people are like me) think about what they've been up to and where they're headed. It's almost like I'm thinking about New Years resolutions now (and I think it's legit since my year started on March 18th)...things like procrastinating less...

On a related note, I have a paper due in about 18 hours...still haven't read the book. Better get working on those resolutions huh? ;)

hmmm....

Was going good there for a while. Honestly, there have been a number of occasions when I had things I WANTED to post, but just never got around to for one reason or the other. Long and short is that laziness wins out.

Some of the thoughts that I have had that I wanted to post:

Excited about one of my classes this semester. Contemporary Moral Issues. Another philosophy class that seems promising. I figure by the time it's over I'll either really love or really hate it, with basically no chance of any middle ground.

What is wrong with people? Why do we have this pathological need for people to agree with us and tell us we are right. I mean, I kinda get it on the one hand, but isn't having a belief enough without having to have it validated by others agreeing? Are we such insecure beings that we aren't really sure about those beliefs so we want the reassurance of others agreeing with us?

There are probably a couple more but for some reason I can't seem to think of them now...one of the dangers of not doing something righ away when it's still fresh in your mind.

LOL!

Just ran into this definition of LOL and thought it was funny enough to share...

It's original definition was "Laughing out loud" (also written occasionally as "Lots of Laughs"), used as a brief acronym to denote great amusement in chat conversations.

Now, it is overused to the point where nobody laughs out loud when they say it. In fact, they probably don't even give a shit about what you just wrote. More accurately, the acronym "lol" should be redefined as "Lack of laughter."

Depending on the chatter, its definition may vary. The list of its meanings includes, but is not limited to:
1) "I have nothing worthwhile to contribute to this conversation."
2) "I'm too lazy to read what you just wrote so I'm typing something useless in hopes that you'll think I'm still paying attention."
3) "Your statement lacks even the vaguest trace of humor but I'll pretend I'm amused."
4) "This is a pointless acronym I'm sticking in my sentence just because it's become so engraved into my mind that when chatting, I MUST use the meaningless sentence-filler 'lol.'"

How's Trix?

Well, it hasn't been my standard two months without a post but what the heck? Honestly, I've had a bunch of stuff floating around that I kept MEANING to post about, but well, I just haven't. This is just a general update type thingy. A "How's thing going?" if you will. On a whole, things are going well. So far I'm pretty sure I'm getting As in both of my classes, though I have to say I've been very dissatisfied with my Legal Philosophy class. When I signed up for the class I was hoping for really meaty philisophical discussions about the nature of law, and all that happiness. What I got was a class with a room full of students who don't seem to want to speak up in the class. I swear, I thought I actually heard crickets a couple times in this class. Doesn't help that the teacher doesn't challenge us enough (i.e. at ALL) so I'm definitely coasting through that class (with a 97...guess if I was trying I'd have 100). The other class is Abnormal Psychology (so I can finally get a better understanding of my friends and associates...heh) which is the more challenging of the two, and also the more engaging. As I said, I'm pretty sure I have an A in the class, but not the out of the park homer that the Legal Phil class has been.

I'm watching a couple of new shows now. The major networks finally found a way to fit TV into my schedule. By putting their shows online. This is both a blessing and a curse, because it means that I actively have to watch these shows now, but they've been pretty good so far. For anyone interested they are:

Heroes on NBC: http://www.nbc.com/Video/rewind/full_episodes/?show=heroes
The Nine on ABC http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing and
Dexter on Showtime http://www.sho.com/site/dexter/home.do

I haven't been this hooked on TV in a while...

Also was told about a comedien named Dane Cook who has a lot of his stuff available on youtube. This made me laugh so hard I was crying. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN5fSkcVzuY

Enjoy

You'll never guess who I saw at work today!

No really...you won't. Guy named Josh that I haven't seen since LITERALLY the third grade. I was at work, and this guy looks at me and says "I know you. You were in my third grade class." It was kinda funny because I knew who he was right away. Now normally when you see someone you haven't seen in that kind of long time (20 years?)...you catch up some...say "Wow it was great catching up." or "We should catch up" or "Stay in touch"...but everyone involved knows it's not gonna happen...except in this case I think it will. Me and Josh were kinda inseperable back then...he wasn't just my best friend, he was probably my only friend. Thing is, I'm kinda nervous. I mean, it's been 20 years. Will we still have anything in common? What if we try to...I dunno...be friends again, and it just doesn't work? Will that sully what was? Anyhow, we DID actually exchange phone numbers, so hopefully we'll at least be able to catch up. Who knows? I may have rediscovered an old friend!

Clerks 2!!!

Saw Clerks 2 last night and it was funny as hell (though gross). I recommend anyone that is fond of the View Askew Universe to go and see it quickly, because it seems to be making its exodus from theatres (4 new movies came out tonight, so it's already in limited theatres, plus it probably hasn't been doing great if it's already being pushed out).

Warning: It's not for the easily offended...

Seriously.

Dilema

Have a strange dilema. I've been invited to not one, not two, but THREE parties on the same day in August!!! And they're all at basically the same time (at least starting time). The first one's a co-worker's party. Having basically everyone from the Motor Vehicle Agency I work for over for a barbeque type dealy. (I've already agreed to bring the burgers, so I'm kinda locked into that one.) Then two of my friends have birthdays around that time and are doing parties too...and they are all starting at around the same time of 6-7PM! Anyhow, I have to choose between sticking with one party, or being a social butterfly, and driving all over the place. I guess there are worse problems to have than a busy social life...but does it all have to get packed into ONE DAY?!?! ;)

so very tired...

MR's in a couple of hours. I should be packing, or getting stuff ready, but right now I'm just too damn tired. I can only hope I'm fighting something, since I feel far from normal at the moment. Just general fatigue and don't feel like doing anything productive (okay, that's not SO unusual, but moreso than usual). I think the weather has something to do with it. It's kinda hot, that could be contributing to this lethargy...oh well, time for me to go. Maybe I'll perk up over the weekend.

New and exciting? Not so much

Well, it's been some time since I updated, so here I am again. By now, I imagine you've heard about the state shutdown. I haven't been back to work since Saturday, and don't figure I will be till next week. It's funny because when you're out of work for a few days people get jealous, but I'll be honest...it gets old real fast. Still have work I can/should be doing, so I'm gonna try to get some of that stuff done. Tommorow I'm going to Seaside for Spliss's b-day.

Also, I got a letter back from a place I had put in an application for a house (low income, done by lottery). Number 100 out of 305, so there's a possibility I'll get it...not exactly sure how I feel about that yet, but I have some time to figure it out.

School's going well. Taking my first test next week...expect to do relatively well on it. Of course, now I have to start thinking about what Rutgers classes I'm going to take in September (going through the Communiversity)...majoring in....*drumroll* Liberal Studies! Repeat after me: "You want fries with that?" hehehe...well at least it's a step...just gotta figure out what I want.

Mystic Realms event this weekend. Only time I'll get to PC for a while (at least Evermore) so I'm looking forward to it.

My trip to Kansas City was fun, but made me realize what a racist my friend D is...and kind of a snob too, but I digress. I'm trying to make her realize how she sounds...it's slow going, but I felt like I made some small amount of progress over the weekend...

Mom's in Florida with HER mother. There's a real chance grandma is coming to live with us. She's not really able to take care of herself anymore, and forgets things and seems to be getting confused easily. I feel bad for Mom...she's in a tough spot, since she wants to do what's best for her mother, but seems to be trying to do it all on her own...plus she (and her two sisters) seem unwilling or unable to do what'll be best for grandma because it's not what she wants. It's unfortunate, because she doesn't neccessarily know what's best for her. It's kinda strange, and makes me wonder what my future will be like.

Well that's enough prattling on for now....

I'm going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come

Not sure if I mentioned it, but yeah, I'll be taking off for Kansas City at 4:25 PM tomorow from Newark Airport. I'm visiting my friend Jason (with whom I have shared every job in radio I've ever had). http://www.965thebuzz.com/jason.asp

Me and Donna (DC) have been talking about (and postponing) this trip for a while now...it'll be good to finally get out there for a visit.

It'll be good to see Jason again. When I lived in AC and worked for the station he was my closest friend down there. He was also responsible for my last 2 jobs in radio.

It's funny when I think about it. When I lived down near AC, I always found it frustrating that my friends rarely came down to visit, and it was always me going up there. I still have friends in AC, and when I left there, I planned on occasionally taking the trip down there to visit. That's happened much less frequently than I planned...so I guess they were right...damn it's inconvenient to head down there...

That'll have to be my next trip...AC anyone?

Been a while...

Well, I made it just under the 2 month mark since my last post. I would say that I should post more often, but I know that's just not going to happen, so...moving on.

Let's see, what's been going on since my last update. Well for one, I bought a new car (though I imagine anyone reading this already knew about it). So now I'm the proud owner of an 06 Ford Focus.

I'm also going back to school, and transfering to Rutgers in the fall. The degree is Liberal Studies. I know, I know...but hey, it's a BA that could get my foot in the door for opportunities in the future...especially working for the state.

Recently at work I was told by a customer I remined him of Brian O'Halloran (you may know him as Dante from Clerks).

I find that kind of amusing...(check the name of the journal).

Better than being compared to Tom Green...

(someone just figured out how to add images, huh?)

hmm...I think I'm done...honestly, I thought I had something of actual substance to get at, but that seems to be gone....next time...

Maybe in another 2 months...

A question of protocol

I'm guessing that most of you that read this already know, this, but my birthday was 10 days ago (at least by the time this gets read). Kind of a big one for me....the big 3-0. There were gifts and cards and "Happy Birthdays" and free drinks...all the good stuff that comes along with a good birthday, but now I have a dilema. I got these birthday cards, and I have no idea how long I should keep them. I'm not a terribly sentamental guy, so the totally pragmatic part of me gets the cards, reads it and wants to dispose of it almost immediately. For some reason doing that just feels wrong so I never do it, but I mean really...I don't want to be going through old junk 5 years from now and be like "oh a birthday card...from my 30th birthday"...

So my question is, how long do you hold onto birthday cards for? And why didn't I get one from you, hmm??? ;)

Yikes

It has certainly been a long time since I did this. Let's see, what's new? I actually had a scary and then stupid experience related to school. Y'all missed a pretty funny freak out, so I'll sum it up for you.

1) Meet with Councilor for Rutgers to see about becoming a transfer student
2) Councilor recommends certain classes at Brookdale over the summer that will meet requirements
3) check Brookdale website for classes only to discover they're all filled (all unavailable)
4) flip out
5) Call councilor back (get his assistant) only to find out that classes for Brookdale's summer sessions just opened...hmmm...wait the numbers I saw for the classes 25/25 were the number of AVAILABLE spots.....not filled....oooOOOooooo....

Anyhow, I'm trying to figure out a way I can take classes over the summer. I have room for 9 total credits. Need 2 science classes (6 credits) and a lit class all as requirments for the program I'm going into (Liberal Studies). I wanted to take a physics and a chemistry class for the two sciences, but the problem is there is no such thing as a 3 credit chem class...and also the physics class that's 3 credits is Monday and Wednesday nights, and I work late every other Monday night...

What to do, what to do.

Also, I seem to have gained a lot of weight. I mean really...and I've had this stupid gym membership over a year now...guess how many times I've used it? Gotta get back on a diet (Atkins worked wonders for me before) and get my ass to a gym. I've half a mind to do one of those pictorial update thingies so I'd be embarressed into getting fit....

Bah, I should be packing for Realms tommorow....

To be continued...

Nice place ya got here....lots of space

WHew...been a while huh? Not sure how much catching up I'll do but here goes:

Those 3 classes I signed up for in my last post (ya know...the one from 4 MONTHS AGO)...got my grades. 2 A's and a B+. I have to admit that two of those grades were essentially gifts from the instuctors. If you ever want to really lay back and take it easy in a class make sure you take it with an adjunct...they don't like failing anyone. Makes them look bad. Now I have to decide if I'm going to take any classes this coming semester (They start in like 5 or 6 days, so...I got time). Reason I might not take classes is that I see a car payment in my near future. Mt old Buick is starting to die. Transmission slips when I'm at a dead stop trying to get moving. It's always fun to have some guy honking at me while my engine is racing because I'm hitting the gas but the car's still not moving. Sometimes I have to drop to 1st gear to get it moving, so, I figure it's just about time for me to purchase a new car. This time I don't have money saved to buy a car outright so, I'm gonna have a payment, plus insurance goes up. The upside is that I can actually afford it now, since I have few other expenses, but since my budget is going to be tightening up considerably, I figured maybe adding money to my existing debt, not the best idea possible. Besides, I can only take 8 more credits at BCC and have them transfer to a 4 year school (probably doing Rutgers through the communiversity).

Finally mailed a letter to my brudda in da joint. Keep hoping he'll have learned something from this when he's out. Not overly hopeful though. Well I think that's gonna be it for now. I kept promising myself that I would update this...I figure it's high time I start keeping those promises I make to myself....now about that gym promise....I'll just have to wait on that one...still wanna see a Dr about my cracky wrist. It's actually starting to be painful now...okay...I said that was gonna be it for now 5 lines ago...I really mean it this time....bye! ;)
